SparkText Messaging Guide

Why you're not getting replies on dating apps

If your messages keep dying on read, it's rarely "you" — it's usually one of three fixable things. Here's how to find which one, and fix it.

When nobody replies, the instinct is to assume it's your photos, your face, or just bad luck. Usually it's none of those. It's the message — and the message is the one thing you fully control.

Almost every reply problem traces back to three causes. Work through them in order.

Three matches
No replies
❌ The pattern that gets ignored
hey
hi how are you
wyd this weekend
✅ The one that gets a reply
your dog has the exact energy of someone who has never once been told no. what's his name and his crime
his name is Biscuit and the crime list is LONG 😂
Not sure why a chat stalls? SparkText reads effort balance and momentum so you can see whether it's the message or the match.

The three fixes, in order

  • Fix the opener. If it's generic ("hey," "how's your day"), it dies on arrival. Lead with one specific detail from their profile.
  • Give them something easy to answer. No question, or a yes/no question, gives them nothing to grab. End with one open, low-effort hook.
  • Check your range. If every message goes unanswered, you may be aiming far outside your realistic match range. Widen it and watch reply rates jump.
  • Don't blast the same line. Copy-pasting one opener to everyone shows, and it performs worse than a tailored message to fewer people.

Most-asked: "Is it my photos or my messages?" → If you're matching but not getting replies, it's the messages. If you're not matching, it's the profile.

What the data saysReply rates
By gender
~1 in 6

Men often see roughly one reply per six openers — so a specific, confident first message does real work.

By message

Profile-based openers with a clear question consistently outperform copy-paste lines by a wide margin.

By range

Aiming realistically lifts reply rates more than any single line ever will. Match effort to your actual range.

No replies, answered

Diagnose it, then fix it.

Why does no one reply to me on dating apps?
If you're matching but messages go unanswered, it's almost always the message: a generic opener, no easy question, or aiming outside your range. All three are fixable without changing a thing about you.
Is it my photos or my messages?
Simple test: if you're getting matches but no replies, it's the messages. If you're not getting matches, it's the profile and photos. Fix the right thing.
Should I double text if they don't reply?
One light follow-up is fine; more than that hurts. If a single, no-pressure nudge gets nothing, move on — see how to revive a dead conversation for the one re-opener that works.
Am I messaging too many people?
Quantity isn't the problem — sameness is. Ten tailored openers beat fifty copy-pasted ones. Slow down and make each first message specific.
